- How To Install a Hands Free MP3 Adapter on your 1987-2006 Mustang
FREE 1 to 3-Day Delivery on Orders $119+ Details
If you have an '87 to 2006 Mustang, you might wanna check out the Hands Free MP3 Adapter. This device not only lets you take hands-free phone calls, but it also lets you play your music from your phone or any portable media through your car speakers. It's a plug-and-play unit that's great for someone looking to easily bring some of the modern conveniences to their older generation Mustang that doesn't come from the factory with these abilities. The install for this is easy. It's a one out of three wrenches in the difficulty meter, and you can plan on it taking about 45 minutes to get in the car. The first thing I'll say about this is that this isn't wireless. This won't allow for a Bluetooth connection. You will need to plug into this. The good news about that is that this will play from anything that has a 3 and 1/2-millimeter headphone jack. That means your smartphone, a portable media device, MP3 player, iPod, satellite radio, or even a CD player. This does leave you with a lot of options, which is a nice thing, because you aren't limited. The other thing that's a little bit different about this is that, once you're plugged in, not only can you play music, but you're also connected to your smartphone, so you can take phone calls, too, hands-free. The way that this works is it plugs into your factory radio. You don't have to worry about tying up your 12-volt socket since it'll be plugged in directly to the factory radio and be hidden behind the dash. This won't interfere with the radio either like some other options out there do. This is more of an extension of the factory radio than anything else. As far as price, you can expect to spend just over $100 for this. This really is the only device that's currently available that'll let you route both phone calls and music through your car stereo. There are other ways to get music through your car stereo and even Bluetooth options, but nothing that will also allow for phone calls and other portable media. The install for this isn't difficult. It's a one out of three wrenches in the difficulty meter. You can plan on spending about 45 minutes getting this installed. There isn't one correct way to install this, and you can chain off your mounting points and your routing points off if you want to, but that's gonna be up to you. Of course, the install will change slightly depending on what your Mustang you're installing this on. You'll need to get to the radio, so you're gonna have to remove your shifter handle, shifter bezel, and center radio bezel. Unclip all of the accessories, and unbolt the bolts holding the radio in place. Gently remove the radio, and unclip the radio harness and the antenna. Connect the black antenna cable to the radio. Connect the orange antenna cable to the Hands Free device. You can use zip ties to mount the device somewhere, like to the radio mounting bracket, for instance, behind the dash. Start routing the cables where you want them to go. You can tuck the cords anywhere, but make sure that the jack is where you can get to it. Unwind the black and red cable, route the red cable to the fuse box, and you'll need to bend the end a little bit to get the fuse panel protector back on. Find a good ground for the black wire, and then you reinstall the radio and the trim pieces that you removed. That's gonna wrap things up for the Hands Free MP3 Adapter for the '87 to '06 Mustang, but you can always check it out more online right here at americanmuscle.com.
